Winners Story: 2000 Canadian National Amateur Field Champion From Retrievers ONLINE and Retriever Field Trial News Among the 2000 CNAFC Finalists were four prior National Champions from both the USA and Canada -- a highly competitive group that we were proud that he was part of Additionally ont on September 20, 1997 Chip and Dennis were one of nine FINALISTS in the 1997 Canadian National Open Championship Stake. Dennis took co-ownership of Chip in March 1997. Since then he has been doing all the training himself. He has a record of being a very successful amateur with being a finalist at Canadian Nationals in prior years with other dogs. Additionally he has totally trained several field champions and amateur field champions and has won a double header. Fiona McKay and he are the editors of ONLINE a publication on training retrievers. See the Windstorm resource page for more information on ONLINE. Dennis does extensive duck and pheasant hunting with Chip during the off trial season. He has hundreds of duck and pheasant retrieves to his credit. Hard to capture cripples are his specialty!! Chip has had several litters and the owners of the pups from those litters can give testimonials to the birdiness, trainability, and good looks of his offspring. Contact Dennis Voigt for information on Chip's current litters. Chip is a very stylish athletic chocolate. He has powerful water entries and shows speed and desire in the field. Marking is excellent and he carries long lines on his blinds. Runs his blinds with as much enthusiasm as he goes for his marks. Weight is approximately 72-75 pounds. Eyes are medium brown. Personality is very people oriented. He is a good house dog that gets along well with other dogs in the house or in the kennel or at a trial. Chip throws yellow as well as chocolate. The high level of trainability and desire to retrieve in both
his parents has been passed on to Chip.
Chip's basic work was done by Dave Smith (Assistant Trainer to Mike
Lardy) in evenings . His wife Shelley and children Dana and Jesse
helped. Chip lived in Dave's house with his family. On and
off when Chip was in transition and getting ready for Qualifying, he was
on the Handjem training truck, but there wasn't always room for him.
As a result, Chip didn't have as much consistent training time as a typical
competitive dog does in his first three years. In his first Qualifying
he was run by Mike Lardy and received a reserve JAM. In his
next two in February 1997 Dave Smith and Chip got a second
in a Qualifying and Marilyn Fender and Chip got a third .
These two placements were achieved against Canadian All Age dogs
as well as talented US contestants in very large Qualifying Stakes. In March 1997, Dennis took him as a co-owner to Canada where he
continued Chip's advancement to All Age skills. In summer 1997 Dennis
qualified Chip for the Canadian National where he became a finalist on
September 20, 1997..
